CC finally ties knot with Wong

Three years of negotiations result in joint venture agreement for Clifford Chance and Singapore’s Wong partnership

Clifford Chance (CC) has finally managed to seal a joint venture with Singapore firm WongPartnership, three years after it originally entered negotiations with the firm.

The two firms were originally due to launch a joint venture in November 2000. But just a month prior to this, a team of seven Wong partners led by highly rated corporate lawyer Lee Suet Fern left to set up new firm Stamford and the deal collapsed.

Stamford went on to set up a joint venture with Shearman & Sterling, but that ultimately collapsed earlier this year.

The new partnership, to be called Clifford Chance Wong will be launched on 1 January 2003, bringing together the 70 lawyer civil and commercial practice of WongPartnership and the six partner CC office. It will be jointly run by CC’s Singapore managing partner Philip Rapp and Alvin Yeo of WongPartnership.

“The two firms have the benefit of drawing on the experiences of an excellent relationship developed over the years,” said CC managing partner for Asia Jim Baird.
