Clifford Chance has slimmed down on partner promotions this year, making up 31 lawyers compared to 39 equity entrants in 2002. London, like last year, announced the largest number of partner promotions with nine associates joining the partnership. However, this was down on last year, when 15 lawyers were made up. Last week The Lawyer revealed that Clifford Chance was, like Linklaters, cutting headcount, specifically in London and in its corporate department. With four promotions, Frankfurt sustained the same number of lawyers entering equity as last year, but in New York only two new partners were announced compared to four last year.
