Greg Olsen will rejoin the magic circle firm's London competition team as a partner after leaving as a senior associate in 2001 to set up Jones Day's London competition team.
"I feel I'm leaving the team at a point when its forging ahead," said Olsen, who led the Jones Day team that successfully advised MasterCard on its high-profile appeal against the Office of Fair Trading's (OFT) ban on interchange fees.
Such expertise in financial services is a good strategic fit with the Clifford Chance team, said partner Oliver Bretz. Olsen is a vital hire for the competition group, which lost two up-and-coming partners earlier this year in the shape of Michael Bryceland, who is taking time out of the law, and Sonya Branch, who joined the OFT.
Global head of competition Simon Baxter said: "This lateral hire is part of the ongoing growth strategy for our competition practice in both Europe and worldwide."
