The firm has strengthened its offering in Japan with the hire of New Zealand M&A star Paul O'Regan from Chapman Tripp as its new head of corporate in Tokyo.
O'Regan, who has been a partner with New Zealand firm Chapmans for 25 years, is to relocate from Wellington, New Zealand, to take up the newly created post.
The move fills the gap in Clifford Chance's offering in Tokyo, which had been lacking a senior non-Japanese corporate partner, but also strengthens its longstanding strategic alliance with Chapmans.
Clifford Chance global head of corporate Peter Charlton says that the appointment came about by the firm having previously worked alongside O'Regan through its alliance with Chapmans. He says that the lawyer also offered the right level of seniority and expertise in energy and telecoms commercial law that was lacking in the Tokyo office.
