Clifford Chance has strengthened its strategic alliance with New Zealand M&A firm Chapman Tripp by hiring star partner Paul O'Regan as its new head of corporate in Tokyo.
O'Regan, who has been a partner with Chapman Tripp for 25 years, will relocate from Wellington, New Zealand, to take up a newly created post at the helm of the Clifford Chance corporate team in Tokyo.
Clifford Chance global head of corporate Peter Charlton said the firm had been looking for a senior non-Japanese corporate partner to bolster its Asian capability.
He explained that the firm had previously worked with O'Regan, through its longstanding informal alliance with Chapman Tripp in Asia and that the 57-year-old offered the right level of seniority and expertise in energy and telecoms commercial law.
Chapman Tripp joint managing partner Mark Reese said he expected O'Regan's appointment to strengthen the firm's "relationship with Clifford Chance in Asia".
O'Regan has been appointed to the Tokyo-based role for three years, reporting to Asia head of corporate Roger Denny and Asia managing partner Jim Baird.
The appointment bolsters Clifford Chance's Tokyo office to 14 partners.
