This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
The publication of The Lawyer Rising 50 in November 2004 recognised a group of firms for the first time that challenge the top 100 in many areas but are considerably less well known.
Top of the pile in gross revenues was East Midlands-based Nelsons, with a turnover of £14.96m. But heading the all-important revenue per partner (RPP) table was Southampton’s Moore & Blatch.
Much of the credit for steering the firm into pole position goes to Michael Caton, managing partner for the last 12 years. Back in February 2002, in an interview with The Lawyer, Caton explained that, via flexible working and technology, he was planning to increase productivity and profitability.
That year also saw the firm win Direct Line as a client, which was worth some £2m in fees. This year, thanks to the long tail of personal injury work, much of the benefit flowed through in terms of revenues. The firm’s high-end private client practice, plus a solid transactional practice, also helps explain the top-ranked RPP position.
