Source: Art Collecting: the benefits for your business. Prepared for Arts & Business by Peter Harris and Jonathan Flowers When Brighton-based law firm DMH committed to a three-year sponsorship of the Brighton Festival in 1998 it's unlikely that the firm envisaged its association with the arts to grow to what it is today, or the extent to which it would contribute to the cultural change that has taken place within the firm. Sponsorship of the festival led to the firm being encouraged to exhibit contemporary art in its Brighton office. The response from staff and clients was so positive that the firm created a permanent exhibition space, Gallery 100. DMH appointed a curator who became responsible for showing a different collection of works every two months. The works are all by local artists, which enables the firm to support the local arts community. The gallery also provides an excellent, cost-effective space for hosting unusual corporate events, creating a positive impression for clients and other visitors to the firm. Since it was established, the firm has received numerous positive comments about the gallery and even instructions directly as a result of it. On a day-to-day basis the gallery has created an inspiring environment in which to work and greater accessibility to the general public. In fact the whole concept has proved so successful that DMH is soon to open Gallery 40 in the reception of its expanded Crawley office.
