A 19-stone salesman who sat on a sofa has delivered a cautionary tale for insurers with shaky furniture. Maurice Leahy was visiting the Croydon offices of Direct Line Insurance when the receptionist invited him to sit on a sofa while he waited, which collapsed beneath his weight, injuring his back. Leahy has now received u80,000 compensation from the Swedish manufacturers of the sofa in an 11th hour settlement at the High Court. Leahy suffered pain and psychological trauma as a result of the accident.
