A French policeman came face-to-face with the German gang who attacked him after a World Cup football match in 1998. Daniel Nivel and his wife faced his attackers in a court in Essen for the first time since they beat him into a coma. Nivel, who attended court for just a day, has no memory of what happened. He was in a coma for six weeks and is partly paralysed and blinded in one eye. He was seen limping and staring into space in the court. He avoided speaking to the gang as they threw sideways glances before two of them apologised to him in court.
