The Bruce Grobbelaar libel trial ended at the High Court with the former
Liverpool goalie vindicated. The Sun newspaper, now liable to pay
Grobbelaar u85,000 damages and u400,000 legal costs, is appealing the
decision. The Sun, represented at the trial by George Carman QC, had
claimed Grobbelaar accepted u40,000 to fix a match between Liverpool and
Newcastle. Grobbelaar, represented by Richard Hartley QC, said after the
case that he had "nailed the lie" that he ever took bribes.
