Eleven years after the death of 96 football fans in the Hillsborough disaster, a jury has failed to reach a decision on whether the senior police chief in charge of the crowd was responsible for the tragedy.
David Duckenfield, the former South Yorkshire police chief superintendent was charged with manslaughter. Alun Jones QC, prosecuting, failed to make a strong enough case against Duckenfield, represented by William Murray.
Following a six week trial which cost around £4m and five days deliberating, the jury were dismissed when they told the judge they could not come to a decision.
Mr Justice Hooper has ruled that there will be no retrial of Duckenfield.
