Lord Melchett, the chief executive of Greenpeace, and 27 other members of the environmental group, were found not guilty of criminal damage after destroying a field of genetically modified (GM) maize. The jury not only found in their favour, but also ordered that the prosecution should award them £250,000 costs.
The decision enraged farmers and GM industry body Scimac, and gave the green light to protesters to continue the battle against the so called 'Frankenstein foods'. Lord Melchett, a farmer and former Labour MP, vowed to carry on fighting. He told the court that GM produce was 'one of the most frightening things' he had come across.
