Case of the week

Konrad Kalejs, 86, who is accused of Nazi war crimes, has been served with a deportation notice by the Home Office. Kalejs has lived at a Leicestershire residential home for the past six months since his arrival in the UK from Australia. He was ordered to return to Australia where he has held a passport since 1957 after leaving his native Latvia. But Home Secretary Jack Straw is under pressure to charge Kalejs with war crimes while he is on UK soil. So far, Kalejs has already been expelled from the US and Canada, but he has not been charged on allegations that he participated in the murder of Jews in the Second World War. Straw says the Metropolitan Police lacks the evidence to support such a charge.
