Case of the week

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson (pictured) was cleared of a driving offence at Bury Magistrates Court after offering the lamest excuse ever – he needed the toilet. Sir Alex told the court: "I had to go somewhere quickly." Sir Alex, represented by Manchester-based sole practitioner Nicholas Freeman, justified driving his BMW up the hard shoulder of the M602 by the fact that he was suffering from diarrhoea and wanted to avoid a messy situation.
