  • I was on this scheme at University of Law - Moorgate last year and it was a waste of time!

My 'mentor' at a top City firm, did not respond to emails or voicemail messages left by me and indeed the University!!Comment

  • I also found this scheme to be a bit of a waste of time. The solicitor I was matched with was at a firm at the complete opposite end of London to where I lived which made meeting up difficult. I was also invited to an open day for mentees which focused on how to apply for a vac scheme that I had already been rejected from and TCs were recruited solely from the firm's vac scheme. I signed up to the scheme for advice on training contract applications and the solicitor I was matched with had transferred from the bar via the paralegal / QLTT loophole which existed up until a couple of years ago so couldn't help me. Made me question whether any time at all was spent "matching" mentors to mentees.

  • I took part in the scheme in 2011/12 and was paired with a solicitor in local government working at the borough council offices. At the beginning they ask you what sort of law you're interested in and match you up with a corresponding lawyer. This is especially useful for those not necessarily wanting to follow the corporate law City avenue.

I was able to meet my mentor on a number of occasions over the course of a few months and was invited to attend a meeting of the Licensing Committee as they were debating some of the work my mentor had been working on.

The whole scheme gave me a great insight into working in the public sector and definitely was a factor in the subsequent applications I made. I'm hoping the experiences I had on the scheme will be of use when I start my training contract in 2014.

Would definitely encourage others to sign up for it!

  • I took part in the mentoring scheme whilst studying the GDL at the Birmingham centre and found it a really valuable scheme to be a part of.

I met my mentor several times over the course of the scheme, and he was really helpful in checking my CV and setting up a mock interview. This was particularly beneficial in preparing me for my vacation scheme assessment centre, and some of the topics they asked in my mock interview came up in my assessment centre interview (both for the vacation scheme and the Training Contract).

The experience also gave me a great insight into working in a full-service firm, and my mentor also set up meetings with current trainees at the firm so I could have an “honest” opinion on life as a trainee.

I would also encourage others to sign up for it!

  • I was part of this scheme in 2011-12 at the Bloomsbury centre and I found the scheme to be very useful. My mentor spent a lot of time helping me with my applications, offering feedback and advice on each and every application before I sent it off. She stayed with my even after the scheme had officially ended and met with her multiple times. I eventually secured a Training Contract at a top City firm - the one that I had been after for two years!

  • I was part of the University of Law's mentoring scheme last year and found it to be extremely valuable. I would definitely encourage others to sign up for it as I feel that it helped me a great deal in my pursuit to secure a training contract.

I was paired with a mentor from a firm that I have been very interested in for a long time. We met several times during the course of the year and remained in contact via email.

My mentor recalled the pressures of the application process and offered very useful advice, answering my very many questions. My mentor was able to give me a true insight into life at the firm and answer queries regarding the application process. My mentor certainly confirmed my interest in the sector that I have now managed to secure a training contract in.
Although this is at another firm, the chance to gain wisdom from my mentor really helped.

Some of the topics in our discussions came up in interviews I had at other firms, and as a result of the mentoring scheme I felt a lot more confident and at ease addressing certain issues. My mentor's proof-reading of my CV went a long way in restoring my confidence and was very useful indeed.

In a nutshell, the experience was invaluable. I really appreciate the time my mentor gave up for me last year and feel that the scheme was fantastic.
