SJ Berwin has promoted 31 lawyers into its partnership in the past three years, 22 of whom have been based in London with only three being women. This is despite a record number of female promotions in 2003-04, when four out of the firmwide total of six were women. Corporate had the most internal promotions with the department accounting for 12 since 2004-05. These were largely within the London office.
By comparison, there have only been two lateral hires into the London corporate team in the past three years compared with three in the Continental Europe offices. The loss of a heavyweight private equity funds team to Kirkland & Ellis’s London office in January this year is likely to create further opportunities for associates within that team.
