Departures from the partnership created opportunities for Norton Rose associates. By far the best bet for internal promotions was in banking and corporate finance: banking accounted for 19 promotions in three years, while corporate accounted for 21. Other departments suffered in comparison: litigation had two internal promotions in three years, property three, tax one and employment two.

London tends to be the centre for internal promotions, with 12 out of a total of 22 in 2006-07.  However, that figure was a return to growth after the previous year, when London only accounted for four out of a total of 14 promotions.

The story is the same for laterals. The firm hired 14 banking partners and 10 corporate finance partners in three years. The biggest lateral growth was in Paris, which saw a surge since 2004 with 12 new partners.  This comes as the partnership continues to rebuild following a series of departures several years ago.  London followed in second place with seven lateral partners in three years, while another seven were split between Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Milan.
