Hammonds has hit the headlines for its numerous partner departures rather than for its 14-strong partner intake. The firm has lost 18 partners in 2006, the year that its equity partner lock-in expired. The corporate, construction and commercial departments were hit most heavily.
Although hiring remains difficult for the firm at a partner level, as shown by the steady decline in laterals, Hammonds has made a high number of internal appointments to keep partner numbers steady. For example, the firm rebuilt its sports team in 2006 with the promotion of Steven Sampson following the departure of department head Jon Taylor to Bird & Bird.
Hammonds is also putting its faith in young lawyers from other firms for the future. It has unveiled a plan to target frustrated senior associates at large City firms for partnership opportunities at Hammonds.
