Since its demerger from Ashfords, Bevan Brittan has leant heavily on laterals for growth, while opportunities for internal promotions have decreased: six in 2003-04, two in 2004-05 and only one in 2005-06.
Compared with its internal total of nine, Bevan Brittan has hired no fewer than 16 lateral partners – three of whom were associates at other firms. The focus of the lateral hiring is in line with the firm’s ambition to expand out of its Bristol heartland; there has only been one Bristol lateral in the past three years. The geography bears it out: in 2005-06 the firm made up only one internal candidate, but hired five laterals, three in London and two in Birmingham, while in 2004-05 there were two internals and nine laterals, one in Bristol, five in London and three in Birmingham. |
