As a conservative all-equity partnership, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert rarely hires laterals. Historically it has launched new practice areas in corporate, banking and IT through lateral hires, but a number of those partners have now left the firm.

The core litigation business of insurance, reinsurance and professional indemnity dominates the partnership appointments, all of which have been internal promotions in the past three years.

Within the litigation departments, the professional indemnity team has been the most consistent at getting new partners through. On the noncontentious side, the corporate group managed to get two into partnership, one of whom was in Hong Kong. IT partner Kit Burden’s departure in 2004-05 may have also helped the IT group’s case for its single internal promotion in 2005-06.
