Cameron McKenna has won three separate beauty parades to advise on water and sewerage privatisations in Bucharest, Sofia and Panama.
In Panama, Camerons has been working on a risk assessment study for the government on plans to privatise the country's entire water and sewerage system. In Bulgaria, the consortium advising the Sofia municipal authority includes Price Waterhouse and Hyder Consulting. In Romania, Camerons is working with the International Finance Corporation, a multilateral agency, in advising the Bucharest city authority.
The head of Camerons' water group, Richard Temple, formerly of Ashurst Morris Crisp, said that Camerons' offices in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Washington DC had given his firm the edge over other bidders. He said there was a "synergy between the work done in the countries in the region".
Temple, along with former Ashursts partner Stewart Martyn Smith, last year advised the World Bank on drawing up guidelines for the privatisation of public utilities. He said the focus of private sector investment in water projects was set to change from Asia to Eastern Europe and Latin America.
