Butcher Burns and former Vertex Law partner Stuart Butler-Gallie bagged the leading roles on the takeover of League One’s Charlton Athletic by a consortium led by former Newcastle United vice-president Tony Jimenez.
The Central London firm took the mandate for the new owners courtesy of an existing private client relationship with Jimenez. Butler-Gallie, the founder of Vertex Law, who is now operating as an independent practitioner, acted for the club, which a longstanding client of his.
The Butcher Burns team was led by property partner Sacha Rifkin and commercial consultant Peter Levinger, the former managing partner at media boutique Sheridans. Commercial partner Claire Rollo, chief executive Jonathan Krestin, property consultant Roger Winfield and commercial assistant Tim Glasby also featured on the deal, which completed within two weeks of the firm winning the mandate.
Although Butcher Burns has previously acted for footballers and other sports stars as private clients, the deal was the first takeover of a football club in which it has been involved.
Levinger, who was involved in the ownership of a number of businesses after leaving Sheridans, said his team’s commercial savvy helped it win the mandate.
“It’s because we’re a small firm with experienced people,” he said. “I have experience of dealing with this kind of matter and that gives us the edge.”
Olswang and DLA Piper acted for the banks, in the shape of HSBC and Lombard (part of the RBS group) respectively.
Associate Zachary Skaife led for Olswang, while associates Amy Jacks and Neil Riley headed the DLA Piper team.
