Bristol firm Burroughs Day has launched a specialist biotechnology acquisition and intellectual property (IP) unit.
The new division was born out of the firm's relationship with Bristol pharmaceutical start-up Hunter-Fleming. Corporate partner Martin Ryan and assistant Marc White aim to grow the unit's client base by offering specialist advice in securing corporate finance, dealing with technology patents and handling acquisitions for pharmaceutical research for Hunter-Fleming and other South West biotech companies.
Burroughs Day has handled all legal work for Hunter-Fleming since the drug development company was founded in 1999. In January the firm acted on its acquisition of Bristol University's spinout research company Aegis Pharmaceuticals.
Partner Martin Day, who heads the unit, says: "Hunter-Fleming has provided us with the ideal opportunity to set up a biotech division, and we're ideally placed to help similar companies and universities."
