Burges Salmon promotes four after 2010 hiatus

Burges Salmon has made up four new partners in this year’s promotion round, marking the first internal promotions at the firm for two years.

It is also the largest set of promotions by the Bristol firm since 2008, when six new partners were made up. In 2009, just one associate was promoted to the partnership.

The promotions are spread across the firm’s real estate, disputes, corporate and commercial practices. Once the promotions take effect on 1 May, there will be 69 partners at Burges Salmon.

Senior partner Stephen McNulty described the new partners as “exceptional and talented lawyers”.

He added: “Their appointment is central to our strategy to build a broad-based UK law firm offering the highest quality of technical and client service. This is an exciting time for our new partners to contribute to the further development of our growing business following our recent move to our new HQ building at One Glass Wharf in Bristol.”

The new partners are: Ross Polkinghorne (real estate); Steven James (disputes, environment and planning); Dominic Davis (corporate and financial institutions); and Brioney Thomas (commercial).

Last week, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer became the first magic circle firm to reveal its 2011 promotions, with 20 lawyers being welcomed to the partnership (4 March 2011).
