Burges Salmon has named corporate partner Alan Barr as its new senior partner, taking over from Stephen McNulty who will stand down after four years on 1 May.
Barr, who made partner at the Bristol firm along with McNulty in 1988, stood in an uncontested election after senior figures took soundings from the partnership at the end of last year.
Commenting on the process, McNulty said: “In a well-run organisation you’d hope that the right leader will emerge. Alan’s been on the board for a long time and is very well respected in this place.
“Once it became clear he would run I don’t think anyone wanted to stand against him.”
McNulty will return to full-time fee-earning and will also give up his place on the six-strong partnership committee, with real estate partner Paul Browne taking Barr’s place as member with responsibility for financial matters.
Browne’s elevation has brought about a reshuffle of the committee with a newly created head of external relations position being created to join Barr, Browne, managing partner Peter Morris, head of people Helen Scott Lawler and head of markets Ian Salter.
