Pittsburgh firm Buchanan Ingersoll is opening an office in northern Virginia to focus on the region's high-tech client base.
It is the 450-lawyer firm's fourteenth office and follows the influx of a number of other practices into the area with the aim of attracting more new economy business.
Last month West Coast giant Latham & Watkins made the same move (The Lawyer, 26 June).
Buchanans is recruiting the highly rated head of the local Economic Development Authority to lead the office. Michael Horwatt, who has his own firm, is one of the US's top technology lawyers and has represented a number of IT companies for more than a decade.
William Newlin, president and CEO of Buchanans, says: "This is our sixth major growth move of 2000 and promotes our long-range plan to serve technology clients in the Washington-Maryland-Virginia corridor."
He says the firm plans to grow the office significantly in the next year.
