Bristows breakaway opens as Powell Gilbert

Five breakaway partners from IP firm Bristows have today launched their own boutique firm, called Powell Gilbert.
The firm launches with contentious IP partners Tim Powell, Penny Gilbert, Simon Ayrton, Zoe Butler and Alex Wilson, as well as five ex-Bristows associates.
The partners gave in their notice last year and worked six months notice before opening the new firm.
Partner Tim Powell said: “It’s been rather a long time before we were allowed to open our doors.”
The firm will advise on a broad range of IP matters in the life sciences, electronic and consumer sectors.
Powell said: “It is incredibly exciting to set up our own firm and be masters of our own destiny.”
Powell Gilbert is based in Southampton Buildings in London’s West End, which used to house the UK Patent Office before it moved to Wales.
