GTLDs and the Trade Marks Clearing House — what brand owners need to do now

As reported last year, the domain name world has been undertaking a radical experiment whereby businesses have been able to apply to own almost any word in any language as a domain ending (a GTLD). This has led to many companies applying to own and run as GTLDs either their own names (.brand) or descriptive terms (.money, .travel) instead of .com or .co.uk. Nearly 2,000 GTLDs were applied for.

With the first gTLDs predicted to launch as early as the end of April this year, the focus for rights holders now shifts to how to protect and promote their brands. To assist with this, there will be an opportunity to record trade marks in the new Trade Marks Clearing House (the TMCH) from 26 March 2013…
