Government announces plans to consult on simplifying pensions auto enrolment
In January 2013, pensions minister Steve Webb promised that the automatic enrolment legislation would be revisited within a year. On 11 February the government confirmed that in March it will begin consulting on proposals to simplify the automatic enrolment process — somewhat sooner than expected.
The phased introduction of automatic enrolment began in October 2012. In that first month it only applied to businesses with more than 120,000 employees, but by the end of 2013 it will apply to those with 500 or more employees and by February 2018 it will apply to every employer in the country. Since October, those employers which have become subject to the automatic enrolment requirements have highlighted a number of problem areas, which suggest that the system is not working as well as it might do…
