Children and Families Bill 2012/13

For some time now, the government has been considering changes to family-friendly rights, in particular to allow more flexibility for fathers. In early February 2013, the proposals came one step closer to becoming reality with the introduction of the Children and Families Bill 2012/13.

The amount of leave and pay is to remain at 52 weeks and 39 weeks respectively but all of it (except the first 2 weeks) is to be available for sharing with the father. Alternatively, the mother and father can decide to take leave concurrently, subject always to a joint maximum of 52 weeks.

Fathers are to have the right to take unpaid time off work to attend up to 2 ante-natal appointments (for up to a maximum of 6½ hours each)…
