A holiday is good for your health
A number of studies have extoled the virtues of the humble holiday, hailing its ability to reduce blood pressure, improve sleep and recover from (or avoid) stress. Those of us who have experienced the forgotten passport and the lost luggage may well doubt whether this is truly the case. But cynical views aside, it is difficult to deny that holiday is important for both employers and employees.
When considering holiday entitlement, a business must first decide what period of entitlement is appropriate for its employees. In Jersey, the Employment (Jersey) Law 2003 provides that an employee is entitled to a minimum of two weeks’ leave each year. To many, this may seem a remarkably short period of leave. However, spare a thought for those in Guernsey who have no minimum statutory entitlement to holiday whatsoever.
In reality, many employers in the Channel Islands provide holiday entitlement consistent with an industry standard and in most cases, this is in excess of any minimum requirements. Whilst this may seem costly to business, frequent breaks are shown to improve wellbeing, may reduce periods of sickness and, are in any event generally expected by the working population.
