Sports lawyers were waiting up for the UK football transfer window to close last night as the final touches were made to last-minute deals.
Slaughter and May corporate partner Andrew Jolly and a team at Brabners Chaffe Street led by sports partner Matthew Bennett were among the advisers busy closing transfer deals as the 11pm deadline approached.
Jolly, an Everton fan, who advises Arsenal Football Club on all its player transfer contracts, acted as legal adviser for the north London club on the last-minute arrivals of Mikel Arteta from Everton, Per Mertesacker from Werder Bremen and André Santos from Fenerbahçe.
Earlier in the window, Jolly advised the club on the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton and Park Chu-Young from Monaco and the transfers of Cesc Fàbregas to Barcelona (16 August 2011) and Gaël Clichy and Samir Nasri to Manchester City (23 August 2011).
Brabners partner Bennett was one of a four-person team staying up on standby until the window closed in case longstanding client Manchester United made any last-second purchases.
The Manchester firm advised the club earlier in the summer on the signings of Ashley Young from Aston Villa and goalkeeper David de Gea from Atlético Madrid.
Bennett said: “This has been the busiest summer transfer window the sports team has experienced to date with us working on over 50 transactions for numerous clubs, players and agents.”
Berwin Leighton Paisner partner Graham Shear, who advised Atlético Madrid on financing related to the £35m sale of striker Sergio Agüero to Manchester City earlier in the summer, advised Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch on his transfer to Stoke City
He also acted for Deportivo Maldonado on the transfer of Marcelo Estigarribia to Juventus and Brian Montenegro to West Ham United.
