The author, Ian Hunter, is a partner specialising in employment law at City law firm Bird & Bird, but has made a second career out of journalism, with past credits including the Independent and Sunday Business.

They say a good lawyer's a dead lawyer - the Dictionary of Legal Biography 1845-1945 takes the point literally. Most - if not all - of the luminaries gracing its pages have long-since passed away - hardly surprising when you consider that to qualify for entry they must have held an official post before 1945.
