Baker & McKenzie is opening its second office in Canada, targeting the oil and gas industry with a new Calgary practice.
The firm has taken on two partners from Canadian rival Gowlings to launch the office. Phillip Bretzloff and Donald Blackett are bringing a team of associates with them to focus on work for oil, gas and energy companies, both the Canadian and offshore varieties. The firm already has an office in Toronto, and this is its 62nd office worldwide and its eleventh in North America. Across the two Canadian offices, the firm now has 63 lawyers, 22 of whom are partners. The new office is aimed at servicing a burgeoning international oil and gas practice. The practice already operates out of offices in Sydney, Houston, Caracas, London, Almaty, Baku, Riyadh, Jakarta and Brazil, where Baker & McKenzie has four offices. Canadian managing partner Bill Watson said Calgary is the energy capital of Canada and as such was a natural fit for the firm.
