Baker & McKenzie is opening its fifth office in Mexico in the country's second largest city Guadalajara.
The firm, which is already the largest law firm in Mexico, is opening in the city because it is the country's equivalent to Silicon Valley and will help it service high-tech clients.
Baker & McKenzie opened in Mexico City in 1961, and has since established three outposts in the north of the country. The Guadalajara office is the 61st in the firm's global network.
Andrés Ochoa-Bunsow, managing partner of the firm's offices in northern Mexico, says: "As a rapidly growing centre for the high-tech industry and foreign investment, Guadalajara holds significant potential for Baker & McKenzie in key practices such as project finance, mergers and acquisitions and IT and communications. We've seen strong growth in Mexico over the last few years."
The firm has 120 lawyers in Mexico and will relocate five to set up the new practice. It will be led by trade and corporate partner Edmundo Elias-Fernández.
Baker & McKenzie has 13 South American offices in Columbia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela.
