Clifford Chance has elbowed out Berwin Lieghton Paisner (BLP) after scooping an instruction to advise furniture retailer Courts in relation to the appointment of advisers.
Milton Keynes-based Courts, which went into administration at the start of the month, instructed Clifford Chance partner Nicholas Frome to act in relation to the loss-making retailer’s unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a deal with its banks.
Courts confirmed that the company had appointed KPMG corporate recovery partners Chris McLoughlin and Chris Laverty as joint administrators on 1 December.
Although the client win is a boon for Clifford Chance, the success may prove short- lived, as Allen & Overy (A&O) is understood to be handling the bulk of the work arising from the sale of the business. The African, Asian and Caribbean parts of the business are unaffected by the administration and are continuing to trade as normal.
