Black lawyers groups unite for Legal Futures Conference

The ‘Legal Futures Conference’, to be held at City University London tomorrow (19 November), will provide a forum for BME students to network with each other, share experiences and highlight the challenges and opportunities that exist for budding lawyers.

This year the conference will address the need to create a personal action plan, to analyse strengths and weakness, develop networking skills, do more proactive research on law firms and chambers and improving CVs.

The Society of Black Lawyers national chair Peter Herbert OBE said: “This year’s conference will address some of those needs through a series of interactive masterclasses and engaging panel sessions.

“200 students attended the Legal Futures Conference last year, and almost all of them stated that the conference had made them think about the changes that they would need to make or the actions that they would need to take in order to achieve their career goals.”

Speakers at the one-day conference include founder and director of Accutrainee Susan Cooper, barrister and vice chair of the Bar Council’s equality and diversity committee Jo Sidhu, Legal Education and Training Review research team member Dr Jane Ching and barrister Brian St Louis.

Topics to be covered at the conference include the future of the legal profession and the changing legal landscape.
