Bird & Bird joins Indonesia race with double allies

Bird & Bird has expanded its Pan-Asian alliance network by adding two Indonesian firms.

The firm has signed strategic cooperation agreements with two Jakarta-based firms, IP boutique K&K Advocates and five-partner firm Nurjadin Sumono Mulyadi & Partners (NSMP).

It is rare for an international firm to form associations with two firms in one jurisdiction. 2Birds said the move would give it access to key sectors that were closely aligned to its core practice areas.

“The introduction of the ASEAN Economic Community has accelerated client expectations and in turn created a strong demand for Bird & Bird’s services within the participating countries and in particular within Indonesia,” said Justin Walkey, Bird & Bird’s Asia Pacific chairman.

Chief executive David Kerr added: “The Indonesian economy is fast moving into a new consumer led development phase which has resulted in a growing demand for high-quality, international advice in areas where technology and regulation are driving change.”

2Birds’ Indonesia expansion is the latest step taken by the firm to strengthen its regional offering. It comes a few months after the firm struck an alliance with South Korean firm Hwang Mok Park (25 February 2014), becoming the first international firm to enter the market in such way.

Last year, the firm tied up with Australian TMT boutique Truman Hoyle (22 March 2013). It also has a similar cooperation agreement with Chinese firm Lawjay Parnters and Malaysian firm Tay & Partners.

Apart from Bird & Bird, the fast moving Indonesian economy has attracted many other international firms to enter the market in recent years. Due to regulatory restrictions, foreign firms are not allowed to set up offices there, but they can access the market via local associations.
