Top IT firm Bird & Bird is advising the Prison Service on a major procurement project to computerise all prisons in England and Wales.
The Prison Service has awarded the contract to provide the information technology to Electronic Data Systems, which is being advised by its in-house team. Electronic Data is also using Clifford Chance on some banking issues.
The deal will see the installation of a computer infrastructure in all 130 prisons and the service headquarters.
Bird & Bird IT partner Roger Bickerstaff is leading a team of seven, which includes employment partner Ian Hunter.
Bickerstaff says: "It is gratifying to be part of a project team that has managed to achieve an award of contract for a major PFI deal within the timescale projected by the client."
The implementation of the project is due this summer. The firm has advised on more than 25 other computer-based PFI deals, making it one of the top firms in the field.
