Bird & Bird won International Firm of the Year at The Lawyer awards last night, in recognition of a global expansion strategy that has helped the firm triple its revenue over the last seven years.
The award was presented by Lord Falconer at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London’s Park Lane last night, with managing partner David Kerr collecting the trophy with three glamorous associates.
Judges were impressed by the way that Bird & Bird has transformed itself from an IP and IT boutique into an international full service firm with a series of office launches.
This year’s financial results show the benefit of the firm’s expansion strategy, which has driven the firm into new jurisdictions from Sweden to Spain and Shanghai, and placed more than 50 per cent of its lawyers outside the UK.
Bird & Bird has seen turnover jump 24 per cent to reach £142m this year, tripling in size since 2001, when the firm turned over £48m in 2001. (The Lawyer, 2nd June).
Salans took second place. The credit crunch has hardly grazed the firm, which is expanding at a faster rate than ever. The firm managed an enormous 35 per cent hike in turnover to hit $280m (£156m) (The Lawyer14th Jan)
Salans has made major hires in Russia, Poland and Turkey, building up its real estate and capital markets groups.
Third place was taken by White & Case, whose London finance team has maintained performance with global clients such as Deutsche Bank despite a turbulent year.
