Leading south-west firm Bevan Ashford has been selected as sole adviser to English Heritage on intellectual property issues, winning the work against competition from City firms.
A spokeswoman for English Heritage's legal department refuses to name the other firms involved in the tendering process, but says that a number of leading regional and City firms and a top 10 City firm were involved.
The work requires Bevan Ashford lawyers to protect and promote the IP interests of English Heritage on a national basis and act as the first external point of call for inquiries and advice on IP issues.
Head of the firm's IP group Mark Lomas says: "It proves that location is not an obstacle for west country practices that can successfully prove both expertise and capability."
English Heritage's legal director Howard Carter says: "Having been on the English Heritage panel since 1996, Mark Lomas and his team at Bevan Ashford undertook a full intellectual property audit of our organisation and successfully demonstrated the expertise and professionalism needed to meet our IP requirements on a national basis."
