Each week, I read with mounting dread the latest developments surrounding the Law Society in your magazine.
I keep hoping there will be some end in sight to the bickering but it never seems to happen. The damage to the profession's image will be irreparable if something is not done soon.
For that reason I welcome the appointment of Jane Betts as our new Secretary General. I hope it does not sound sexist to say that, because she is a women, she may be able to bring some degree of logic to the situation.
Of course, she will not be judged according to her gender but, seeing as the Law Society has never had a female as secretary general, Ms Betts may bring calm where others have failed. The fact that she is not a lawyer is, in the circumstances, even better news.
