Taylor makes way as Capstick takes up City reins; local focus to plug gaps left by national spread
Berrymans Lace Mawer has appointed a London senior partner to ramp up the profile of its City office. In its first major reshuffle since City-based Berrymans and national firm Lace Mawer merged in 1997, the firm has elected Charlotte Capstick, head of the professional indemnity team, as senior partner of the London office. Capstick succeeds Paul Taylor, who will continue as national senior partner. He had been the London senior partner since the 1997 merger and became national senior partner in 1999. With responsibility for London devolved to Capstick, Taylor will be free to focus on the firm's national and international strategy. Capstick's objective is to build the London office's profile. "Each office has its own distinct identity," she said. "I think that's something that was lost in our national emphasis. "I'm delighted and very touched to have been asked by my partners to take on the role. It's a great pleasure for me." Capstick came to the merged firm from the Berrymans side and has been there for nearly 20 years. As the firm's first dedicated London figurehead, her priority is to show how Berrymans has adapted to a changing insurance industry. "Quite often clients have a need that transcends the ordinary distinctions," she said. "It's an increasingly specialist market and I think insurers like a firm with expertise in a particular area." Citing Jim Sherwood's police practice as an example, Capstick said the office will target specialist areas for growth. Personal injury niche areas, including head and catastrophic injuries, are also marked for expansion. Taylor said: "I'm proud that my fellow partners have asked me to continue as national senior partner and lead Berrymans Lace Mawer so it not only faces, but benefits, from the opportunities arising from a changing insurance market - both nationally and internationally." Dismissing the suggestion that Taylor had been pushed out of his role, Capstick said that his international practice had become more demanding and needed specific attention. She added that her role would be closely linked to Taylor's in terms of boosting the Berrymans brand.
