BellSouth Corporation’s general counsel has quit the Fortune 100 telecoms group, to be immediately replaced by two vice presidents in the legal department.
The company said that general counsel Charles Morgan has left for personal reasons. It was recently reported that Morgan was arrested in May on one account of battery on his wife and two accounts of cruelty to children.
A joint statement by Morgan and his wife said: “We regret that a very personal statement matter has become public. The civil action between us has been dismissed. We appreciate the good wishes of our friends and ask that our family’s privacy be preserved.”
Morgan’s responsibilities have been assigned to Marc Gary, vice president and associate general counsel, and Al Gonzalez-Pita, vice president-international legal, regulatory and external affairs.
Gary will be in charge of domestic and corporate legal issues and Gonzalez-Pita head up international legal activities until a replacement is found.
