Because Sir Nigel's worth it

In June 2011 Sir Nigel Knowles appeared on BBC Radio 5’s morning show Wake Up To Money and was greeted by the host with the question: “So, DLA Piper is one of the largest law firms in the world. How come I’ve never heard of them?” (or words to that effect).

Sir Nigel Knowles

Knowles took the broadside on the chin and agreed absolutely that law firms need to do more to raise their profiles.

DLA still hasn’t quite made it onto Saturday night telly, but - as the firm’s UK LLP accounts reveal (see story) - Knowles can console himself with running a business that continues to grow, for which he receives a hefty £1.7m pay packet.

Knowles’ cut isn’t that far off Berwin Leighton Paisner’s top earner, who got £1.65m in 2010-11. Both are completely dwarfed by Irwin Mitchell’s top earning member, however, which took in £5.8m. Although in Irwin Mitchell’s case, the top-earning member was in fact a holding company. Crafty.

Just as well for law firms that they haven’t been singled out in the City pay debate. Let’s hope for Sir Nigel’s sake that Ed Miliband doesn’t read The Lawyer.

  • Dear God save us from a world where Sir Nige doesnt do MORE to promote himself! Ed Milliband may well have the gigantic pay ofCity lawyers in his sight... especially where those lawyers were paid so much for helping the likes of RBS and HBOS leveraged finance teams loose so much money.

  • Sir Nigel should follow the example of Stephen Hester and give up a chunk of his pay packet!! He could, for example, fund scholarships for students from poorer backgrounds to go to unniversity (out of his own pocket and not the pocket of DLA). Now, that WOULD be services to the legal profession...
