BBC promotes in-houser to GC role

The BBC has named a new group general counsel to replace Nicholas Eldred, who left the organisation in 2011 to join auction house Christie’s.

Sarah Jones has been appointed as the BBC’s new group general counsel. Jones joined the BBC in 1996 as head of litigation from Allen & Overy, where she was an associate. At the BBC her responsibilities grew to include the employment and IP teams, and she has since dealt with issues stemming from the Leveson Inquiry, Top Gear and Doctor Who.

Jones’s predecessor Eldred joined Christies as general counsel last summer (31 August 2011). Since Eldred’s departure, head of commercial and regulatory Mark Burgess has been filling in as group general counsel.

Jones sits on the committee of the Media Lawyers Association and has now been asked by the BBC’s director general to join the organisation’s direction group.
