The Government may intervene to ensure barristers pay their subscriptions to the Bar Council, treasurer Michael Blair QC has warned. "It's possible that we may need the Government to legislate to put our finances on the same sound footing as other similar organisations," Blair told the Bar Council Annual General meeting on 14 June. Last year subscriptions raised £2,338,643. The number of subscriptions was down this year but Blair has not given exact details. Despite the fall-off the Bar enjoyed a £250,000 surplus in its finances in 1996.
