A lay person will be at the centre of a new complaints system for the Bar.
The Bar Council seeks a Complaints Commissioner as part of its reforms. But lawyers need not apply - the £60,000-a-year post is a lay one. The commissioner will form a link between the public and the Bar Council, playing a key role in the reformed complaints system due to start in April 1997.
Complaints against barristers will be lodged with the commissioner, who will oversee any investigation and report to a new complaints committee.
The Bar Council said it required someone of high calibre to inspire public confidence.
