The Bar Council has rolled out a brand new website in response to Lord Neuberger’s report, which aims to promote social mobility and diversity in the profession.
‘Become-a-barrister.com’ features short films that aim to give information to aspiring-barristers about the route into law and why a career at the bar is appealing.
The trio of films were produced as a joint project funded by the Bar Council and the four Inns of Court: Gray’s Inn, Lincoln’s Inn, Inner Temple and Middle Temple.
Lord Neuberger’s report urged wide-ranging measures to improve access for students from poorer backgrounds ‘to level the playing field’.
Elsewhere, the Law Society Diversity Access Scheme (DAS) opened its 2011 applications today (1 March), after attracting 175 submissions last year, from which 25 were admitted to the DAS and offered Legal Practice Course (LPC) scholarships, work experience opportunities and mentoring.
Law Society president Linda Lee said: “It is important for the society and the wider profession that becoming a solicitor is open to all those who can meet our high standards irrespective of financial means,”

The DAS was originally introduced to recognise promising entrants who face exceptional social, educational, financial or personal obstacles to qualification.
