The Bar Council has selected the General Medical Council’s Standards Committee chair Ruth Evans as the first chair of the bar’s Standards Board.
Evans takes up her role in January 2006, as the Bar Council splits its regulatory and representative functions ahead of the implementation of the government’s white paper on the future of legal services.
She will head a board of 15 people, including seven lay members. In turn the board will be supported by four regulatory committees, all with significant lay membership.
Evans is a former chief executive of the National Consumer Council and is also a member of the new QC selection panel.
In a statement Evans said: “Consumers, barristers and the public need to be confident that a robust, modern and effective regulatory framework is in place which builds on the rule framework already governing the conduct of barristers.”
